Description
Moot Hall is a building dating from around 1500, with a slightly later additional bay. It features a timber-framed structure with red brick infilling and a clay tile roof. The original design consists of a four-bay plan, with one bay added to the eastern gable end. The building is two storeys high.
On the north, west, and south elevations, the first floor juts out, supported by brackets, with exposed corbels and dragon beams at the corners. The north elevation has three westernmost bays, each with a 4-centred doorway featuring some carving in the spandrels and a 2-light casement window. These three bays originally housed shops. The two eastern bays have single-light casement windows. The first floor has five single-light casements, one for each bay, all with diamond leading. The windows and doors are 20th-century replacements. The eaves are sprocketed. The south elevation is almost identical to the north.
The eastern gable end has a substantial two-stage external chimney stack made of red brick. Inside, the original block includes a hall on the first floor, with a roof supported by arched-braced tie beams, collars, and struts. The building is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
