Description

The K6 telephone kiosk located on the High Street in Yelden is a Grade II listed structure, designed in 1935 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. This iconic kiosk is made of cast iron and has a square plan with a domical roof. It is painted red and features relief crowns in the segmental upper sections on each side, above glazed panels that display the word 'TELEPHONE'. The door and two sides are glazed, each consisting of eight horizontal strips of glass with narrow margin lights.

The K6 kiosk is part of a lineage of telephone kiosks that began with the K1 design in 1921. Following a competition held by the Postmaster General in 1924, the K2 was created by Scott, who was also the architect of Battersea Power Station and Liverpool Cathedral. The K2's Neoclassical design was influenced by Sir John Soane and featured a cast iron cubicle with a domical roof and a perforated crown symbol. The K6, introduced in 1935 to mark the Silver Jubilee of King George V, was a smaller version of the K2, typically painted red with relief crowns and eight strips of glass on each side, differing from the K2's six by three panes.

This K6 telephone kiosk is recognized for its industrial design, showcasing Scott's Neoclassical adaptation for modern technology. It also holds group value with two nearby listed buildings and is situated in a heritage location.
