Description

The War Memorial at Elstow Lower School was built in 1919 and later updated in 1945 to include the names of those who died in the Second World War. Crafted by G. Carroll, the memorial is made of granite and features a three-tiered stepped base with chamfered edges. It has a truncated square column topped with an overhanging capital and a pediment on each face, above a cyma reversa moulding. On the west face of the column, lead lettering states: "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THESE MEN OF ELSTOW WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES TO PRESERVE OUR LIBERTIES IN THE GREAT WARS 1914-1918 (NAMES) 1939-1945 (NAMES) ERECTED BY THE PARISHONERS." The memorial was commemorated on 20 November 1919 by Mr. S. Howard Whitbread CB JP. It has group value with Elstow Lower School.
