Description

Elstow Lower School is a Board School, now functioning as a Lower School, which was built in 1873. It features yellow brick construction with stone, red, and brown brick dressings, topped with tiled pitched and gabled roofs. The building consists of two parallel ranges with gables at both the front and rear.

The front elevation showcases a wide gable on the left and a central gable with a raised gablet, along with an advanced dormer bay and an additional end bay. The advanced wide gable on the left has a central window featuring a stone mullion window with four lights over four tall sashes, set beneath a brown brick pointed relieving arch. To the right of this gable is a tall corbelled chimneystack. Below the gable, there is a doorway under a red brick arch. The central gable has a stone-framed window with four sashes on both the top and bottom. Above this window is a brown brick pointed arch inscribed with the words: 'PASSING RAPIDLY USE HOURS WISELY HAPPILY', along with a clock beneath the arch and a stone cross gable vent above. The apex of this gable features an additional raised gable with a hollow arch and corbelled shoulders, and there is a tall corbelled chimneystack. To the right of the center, a dormer with corbelled shoulders projects over a canted ground floor bay that has a stone frame cross frame window. The far right side includes a stone cross window beneath a stone vent, leading to a rounded entrance within a catslide outshut.

The left return elevation has a four-light stone cross frame window and two gables, the left one being advanced, each with a four-light stone cross frame window. The right elevation is made of red brick and features a chimneystack on the right gable. The rear elevation, also in red brick, includes a domestic wing on the left with 20th-century windows that have plain stone lintels and cills. The school building extends further back, showcasing a large stone cross frame window at the left gable, and a single-storey red brick range with a flat roof and paired sashes in stone surrounds.

Inside, there are brick partition walls, but inserted ceilings obscure the original roof structure. The school has group value with the Elstow War Memorial located in the forecourt. Note that the early 20th-century ranges at the rear are not included in the listing.
