Description
The Congregational Chapel, built in 1808, is a notable structure located on High Street in Roxton. This chapel features a T-plan layout and is constructed of colour washed rough cast with a hipped thatched roof. It is designed in a cottage ornee style, characterized by wide eaves supported on rustic posts.
The chapel has semicircular porches on all sides that are open to the front and rear. The southern porch is in antis and includes rustic pilasters, a vaulted roof, and clustered pinecones that serve as capitals and roof bosses. The windows throughout the building are leaded and feature ogee arches, with some arches being decorative rather than functional. The eastern elevation also has doors with ogee arches.
Three wooden ridge turrets adorn the roof, each with louvres, pyramidal roofs, and finials. Inside, the chapel contains a school room and vestry in the northern and southern wings, with a central chapel that includes a gallery and side arcade.
