Description

37-41 High Street is a row of five houses built in the mid-18th century, with some alterations from the mid-19th century and late 20th century. The buildings are constructed of brick and feature a hipped tile roof, forming a U-plan layout.

The houses rise three storeys and are topped with a dentilled brick cornice. The main range has three windows on the upper floors, which are moulded boxed glazing bar sashes set under segmental heads. The second floor also has three similar sashes, but these are placed under flat heads. On the ground floor, there are two windows that match the first-floor sashes and are positioned under segmental heads. The entrance to No. 38 is located at the left-hand corner, replacing a window, and features a moulded wooden architrave under a segmental head with a half-glazed door. To the right is the entrance to No. 39, which has a wooden architrave under a segmental head with a five-panel door, the upper panel of which is glazed. The entrance to No. 40 is situated between two windows and has a moulded wooden architrave under a segmental head with a six-panel door, the upper two panels being glazed.

The left-hand wing features a canted bay window that rises through two floors and has a flat roof, with eight-pane sashes on the front and glazing bar sashes on the sides. The second floor of this wing has a 20th-century sash window. The right-hand wing includes a moulded wooden architrave for a 20th-century wooden cross-window, with a boxed glazing bar sash on the second floor that resembles the ground floor window but has wider glazing bars. The entrance to No. 37 is located in the left return wall, featuring a wooden architrave under a segmental head with a six-panel door. The entrance to No. 41 is found in the right return wall, also with a wooden architrave under a segmental head and a half-glazed door.
