Description
Mearse Farmhouse is an 18th-century farmhouse, likely an enlargement of an earlier house, with 19th-century extensions. It is built of red brick in Flemish stretcher bond and features a hipped tiled roof with brick dentil eaves, along with a gable-ended range at the rear. The building has brick end and axial stacks.
The layout includes a central entrance hall flanked by a room on either side, with an additional room on the left. The service range at the back may have been remodeled in the 19th century and extended at both ends during that time.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-bay northwest front. The central entrance features a blind bay that is slightly set back on the left. The 18th-century windows are mullion-transom 3-light with casements and glazing bars, displaying cambered brick arches on the ground floor and a similar two-light window in the centre of the first floor. The central wooden doorcase includes pilasters, panelled reveals, and an open pediment with a semi-circular fanlight that has radiating glazing bars, leading to a six-panel door. The left (northeast) end has a 20th-century ground floor window and panelled door, along with the original three-light first floor window and a gabled attic dormer. The rear features a parallel storey and attic range constructed of blue bricks with gabled dormers, extended at either end in red brick.
The interior is reported to be complete and unaltered, showcasing 18th-century joinery, including chimneypieces, doors, window shutters, staircase, plaster ceiling, and ironwork.
