Description
Dagnell End Farmhouse is an 18th-century farmhouse with 19th-century additions. It is constructed of Flemish stretcher bond red brick, with a rendered front elevation. The roof is tiled, with stone coping to the front gables and a brick dentil eaves cornice. Yellow clay pots top the brick stacks located on either side.
The farmhouse has a single depth, two-room plan front range with a central entrance and stair-hall. A kitchen is situated in a wing behind the left-hand room, and a scullery is located in an outshut on the right-hand side. In the 19th century, a bakehouse was built behind the scullery outshut, creating an overall U-shaped plan around a back yard, and including a pentice along the back of the main part of the house.
The front, east-facing elevation is gabled with three bays and finials. It features 18th or 19th-century 16-pane sashes on the ground floor, and 8-pane sashes on the first floor. A central doorway has panelled pilasters and an entablature, an overlight, and a six-panel door. A two-storey outshut is on the right (north) side, with a lean-to slate roof and casement windows; the first floor has leaded panes. The rear, west-facing elevation has a three-storey gabled wing on the right with 2 and 3-light casement windows, the ground floor having transoms. There is a pentice roof behind the main range and a two-storey bakehouse wing on the left with casement windows.
Internally, the farmhouse is virtually unaltered since the 19th century. Original joinery features include panelled doors, cupboards, chimneypieces, sliding window shutters, and a simple stick baluster staircase. Chimneypieces have ornate iron grates, and the kitchen fireplace has an iron range. A kitchen features a chamfered ceiling beam. The hall has a modillion cornice and a ceiling rose. The dining room has a moulded cornice and shelves in arched alcoves, flanking the fireplace. The bakehouse has a segmental arch fireplace with an oven and boiler to one side, and the scullery has tiled shelves. A privy and well are located within the outshuts on the north side.
