Description

Beoley War Memorial, located near St Leonard's Church, is a war memorial built in 1921. It is made of limestone and features a cross with a pinwheel head and a shaft that has chamfered corners. On the south face of the cross, there is a sword carved in low relief, with its blade, hilt, and guard overlaying the arms and shaft of the cross. The base has pronounced chamfered corners, and the two steps of the plinth are octagonal, while the plinth itself is square in plan. The body of the cross shaft, base, and plinth are slightly tapered, and the upper surfaces of the base and plinth steps have a convex curve. The names of those who fell in the First World War are inscribed on the south face of the base, and those from the Second World War are on the west face. The dates "1914-1919 / 1939-1945" are inscribed in italic script on the steps of the south face of the plinth.

The memorial was unveiled by Lord Plymouth in July 1921 and consecrated by the Bishop of Worcester at the same time. It serves to commemorate the dead of both the First and Second World Wars. War memorials like this one hold significant historical and cultural value for many small communities across the country, and this limestone cross is prominently situated near the village church, honoring the men of Beoley who lost their lives in both conflicts.
