Description
The Free Grammar School is a building that now serves as a community hall. It was constructed in 1861 by Henry Day of Worcester. The structure is made of brick with stone dressings and features a machine tile roof. It is a single storey building with a centrally located chimney stack that has stone coped offsets. A tablet shaped like a shield on the stack records the history of the school. To the right of the stack, there are two windows: a three-light window on the left and a two-light window on the right, both with trefoil heads. To the left of the stack, there is a three-light stepped window under a gable, also with trefoil heads. In the left-hand corner, there are two entrances under a gable topped by a stone bellcote, which does not contain a bell. The entrances have segmental pointed heads, and the ledged and boarded doors are adorned with ornamental strap hinges and lock plates. The former school is prominently situated on the High Street and is recognized as a complete example of its type and for its group value.
