Description
The Church of St Peter is a parish church located on Lea Lane in Cookley. It was built in 1849 by E Smith and enlarged in 1872 by J T Meredith. The church is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof. It consists of a west tower, nave, chancel, and north and south aisles.
The west tower has four stages separated by moulded string courses, with angle buttresses and a crenellated parapet. The belfry contains large trefoiled lancets set in deep chamfered reveals, while the second stage features a square-headed two-light window. The first stage has a window with three trefoiled lights beneath a two-centred head.
The north aisle has five bays, with the second from the right featuring a gabled stone porch. The windows in this aisle consist of two trefoiled lights under two-centred heads with labels, and the clerestory includes quatrefoil windows. The chancel has two bays and a vestry to the right, with the east window displaying three trefoiled lights under a two-centred head.
Inside, the church is reported to have box pews with poppy heads.
