Description
Common Hill House is a house dating from the late 17th century, which was rebuilt in the early 19th century. It is constructed of stuccoed brick and features a hipped slate roof behind a front parapet. The building is mainly three storeys high and has two large brick chimneys located at the rear of the front range and at the gable end of the rear wing.
The front elevation consists of five bays, with all windows featuring stone sills and moulded architraves. The ground and first floor windows are glazing bar sashes, while the second floor windows are six-pane sashes. The central entrance boasts a doorcase with an open pediment, a modillion cornice, and pilasters, along with a six-panelled door that has a traceried, segmental fanlight above it. On either side of the doorcase are narrow, traceried sidelights.
On the west side elevation, there is a flat-roofed, bowed projection that is two storeys high and contains three cross casements on each floor. The interior could not be inspected. At the rear right of the house is a two-storey wing with an attic that has dormers. This wing has three bays and has been much altered externally, but it is believed to contain the original late 17th-century part of the house.
