Description

The Star Hotel, formerly known as the Coach and Horses Public House, is a hotel dating from the early 19th century, with later alterations and an earlier timber-framed structure believed to have foundations dating back to 1470. It features red and yellow brick in Flemish bond, along with stone and timber-framing in the carriage-entrance wall. The building has a shallow-pitched Welsh-slate roof, with a moulded rendered eaves cornice and brick stacks located at the right end and along the ridge.

The hotel stands three storeys tall with a cellar and has a three-window range, with the right bay recessed. The windows are boxed sashes, with the second floor having configurations of 4/8, 4/8, and 3/6 panes, and the first floor featuring 8/8, 8/8, and 3/6 panes. All windows have painted channelled voussoirs and keystones, with stone sills on the second floor and a sill band on the first floor. On the ground floor, there are two canted bay windows with plate and coloured glass fixed glazing, enriched cornices, and pitched roofs, flanking a doorcase that features pilasters, a bracketed moulded hood, and double three-panel doors. There is also a carriage entrance to the right, a sill band, and a rendered plinth, along with wrought-iron sign fittings. The hotel includes rear wings.

Inside, the hotel retains timber-framing with heavily-moulded stopped beams and partition timbers. A 17th-century staircase features barley-twist balusters and contemporary wooden treads.
