Description

Katie's House and the Old Post Office are two houses located on the north side of New Street in Childswickham. The buildings date from the 17th century and around 1800, featuring some re-used 15th-century dressings. They are constructed from limestone rubble and topped with a stone slate roof. The structure has two storeys and four bays. The windows have segmental heads and 20th-century casements. The third bay features a wide 20th-century bowed shop window beneath a slated canopy that extends over the doorway to its left. The right-hand bay, dating from around 1700, showcases alternating bands of white and yellow limestone. The first-floor window has plain reveals, while the ground floor window is re-used and consists of two rows of four narrow trefoiled lights under a flat head. There is a second doorway between the first and second bays. The building has coped gables and chimneys located to the left of the second bay and on the right-hand gable, the latter of which has an octagonal 15th-century stone cap that was struck by lightning in living memory and was formerly taller and more ornate.

Inside The Old Post Office, the ground floor features a very large main ceiling joist exposed in what was formerly a shop. On the first floor, there is a fireplace with a canted head cut into a re-used block of stone, which has the defaced remains of quatrefoils, and the jambs contain re-used moulded stone. Katie's House, which adjoins to the west, was not inspected internally but is said to contain no visible features of architectural interest. The presence of a single 17th-century bay at one end of a later range may suggest alternate rebuilding.
