Description
SP 0738 CHILDSWICKHAM CP NEW STREET (north side) 7/163 Katie's House and the Old Post Office 30.7.59 GV II* Two houses. C17 and circa 1800, with some re-used C15 dressings. Limestone rubble with stone slate roof. Two storeys; four bays. Windows have segmental heads and C20 casements. The third bay has a wide C20 bowed shop window under a slated canopy which extends over the doorway to its left. The right-hand bay appears to be of c1700 and has alternate bands of white and yellow limestone. The first floor window has plain reveals. The ground floor window is re-used and has two rows of four narrow trefoiled lights under a flat head. Between the first and second bays is a second doorway. Coped gables. Chimneys to left of second bay and on right-hand gable. The latter has a octagonal C15 stone cap. This was struck by lightning within living memory and was formerly taller and more ornate. Interior: on the ground floor of The Old Post Office is a very large main ceiling joist exposed in the room which was formally a shop. On the first floor is a fireplace with a canted head cut into a re-used block of stone which has the defaced remains of quatrefoils. The jambs contain re-used moulded stone. Katie's House, adjoining to the west, was not inspected internally, but was said to contain no visible features of architectural interest. Alternate rebuilding might explain the single C17 bay remaining at one end of a later range.
