Description

Moat Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the early 17th century with alterations made in the mid-19th century and restoration in the late 20th century. It is timber-framed with painted brick and rendered infill, along with painted brick replacement walling and plain tiled roofs. The building has an L-shaped plan, with the main section consisting of two framed bays aligned east to west. The west bay features a large central chimney with a brick ridge stack, while the cross-wing at the west gable end has two framed bays and a 19th-century external chimney at the south-west corner.

The farmhouse is two storeys high. The framing includes four rows of panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with the cross-wing displaying large cusped ogee braces in the upper corners and one in the second row from the wall-plate. The collar and tie-beam trusses are supported by struts. On the north elevation, the windows are 20th-century casements, with the main part featuring a single-light casement on the first floor. The gable end of the cross-wing has a three-light window on both the ground and first floors, with the ground-floor window having a cambered head.

The main entrance is located in the west side elevation of the cross-wing, which has a 19th-century gabled brick porch with a dentilled eaves cornice. The south entrance features a round-arched head and a large ledged and battened door. Inside, the main beams are stop-chamfered, and there are large back-to-back fireplaces in the main chimney. A doorway with a carved and moulded doorhead is found in the central cross-frame of the cross-wing on the ground floor. Additionally, there is a 19th-century outshut on the south side of the main section. The building is situated on a former moated site.
