Description

Ravenshill Farmhouse is a farmhouse that underwent rebuilding in the late 17th century, with further extensions added in the early 18th century and mid-19th century alterations. It is constructed of handmade brick on a lias limestone rubble base and features two-span plain tiled roofs. The building consists of two parallel three-bay ranges that are aligned north to south, with external chimneys that have offsets at the gable ends, except for the northeast end. The farmhouse has two storeys, an attic with dormers, and a cellar. There is a three-course band between the main storeys of the east range and a dentilled eaves cornice on the west range.

On the west entrance elevation, the windows are 19th-century casements with cambered heads, featuring three-light windows in the outer bays and two-light windows in the central bay. The main entrance, located to the right of the left bay, has a gabled canopy supported by shaped brackets and a 19th-century door. A brick ridge stack is positioned to the left of the centre.

Inside, the farmhouse retains moulded ceiling beams, along with most of the original oak doors and floors. The two first-floor rooms in the east range have 17th-century oak-panelled fireplaces with cornices. It is reported that behind the wallpaper above the fireplace in the southern room, there is a painting on canvas depicting Europa and the bull. A lias limestone rubble wall separates the two ranges, with the earlier east range featuring two gables with casement windows, which was originally the front elevation of the 17th-century house. The cellar, located beneath the later west range, likely belonged to an earlier structure on the site. Ravenshill Farmhouse is noted to be among the earliest complete brick structures in the county.
