Description

The Church of St Michael is a parish church located in Elmley Lovett. The tower dates from the 14th century, while the rest of the church was rebuilt between 1839 and 1840 by John Mills. It is constructed of ashlar stone and has a tile roof, consisting of a chancel, nave, and west tower.

The tower, which is from the 14th century, has three stages and features a recessed octagonal spire and a battlemented parapet with three corner pinnacles, although the north-west pinnacle is missing. It has diagonal buttresses at the ground floor, with roll moulding at the corners above. The 1840 additions on the north and south sides of the tower create porches. The second stage has a tall window with a semi-circular head, while the first stage has a square-headed window. The ground floor west wall includes a restored window of three lights with trefoiled heads under a 2-centred head.

The nave features a battlemented parapet and diagonal buttresses, divided into four bays by stepped buttresses, each with large lancet windows that have labels. The chancel has two bays on the south wall, with a lancet in the east bay and the other bay blank. The east wall displays three stepped lancets and a roundel above inscribed "SUB CRUCE CANDIDA 1840".

Inside, the chancel arch is 2-centred and chamfered. The nave roof has seven bays, while the chancel has two bays with collar trusses. Notable fittings include a late 19th-century font, a 17th-century altar table, a hatchment, and the Royal arms. The church is situated in the middle of a deserted medieval village.
