Description

Farthing Piece is a house that dates from the 17th century or possibly earlier, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. It features a timber-framed structure with painted brick infill and a plain tiled roof. The house consists of three framed bays arranged in a north/south direction, with external chimneys at both gable ends. The chimney on the north gable end includes two re-used late 15th-century spiral-fluted stacks, one concave and the other convex, both topped with concave octagonal caps. The south gable-end chimney is from the 19th century and has two concave octagonal stacks.

The building is a single storey with an attic that includes dormers. The framing consists of three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with long straight braces in the lower corners. The west gable end features a collar and tie-beam truss, with one of what were probably three struts visible to the collar, and a V-strut in the apex.

The windows are 20th-century leaded casements. On the east front elevation, the ground floor has two 2-light windows and a single-light window, along with three gabled dormers that have 2-light windows. There is a central 19th-century gabled balustrated porch built on a brick base, which includes a moulded pendant finial and a 20th-century door with a cambered head.

The interior is said to retain the original roof and the fireplace at the north end. There is a 20th-century addition at the north end that encloses the former external chimney, as well as a 20th-century extension to the south of the rear elevation. The house was previously known as Rose Cottage.
