Description

A country house dating from the 16th century, it was substantially remodelled in the mid-19th century. The house is timber-framed, now encased in rendered brick with planted framing, set upon a sandstone plinth, and has a tile roof. It is arranged in an L-shape, with limbs extending to the west and north, and features numerous decorative chimney stacks.

The west, or garden front, has a gabled projection to the left and a gabled cross-wing to the right, both of two storeys, with a gable-lit attic to the left, and jettied tie-beams. To the left is a 6-light casement window above a multi-light stone window, and to the right, 3-light casements above another set of 3-light casements. The main range is three storeys high, with a central gable and four cross windows to the first floor, arranged in a 1:2:1 pattern. There are three 2-light casement windows on the second floor. The ground floor has a lean-to tiled canopy that extends across the whole frontage of the main range, with a central gabled entrance.

The interior is reported to contain a highly decorative stone chimney piece originating from Shaw, in the North Riding of Yorkshire.
