Description
The Bowling Green Inn is a house that has been converted into a public house. It dates from the late 16th century and was refaced in the early 18th century, with further alterations and additions made in the mid to late 19th century and mid-20th century. The building features a timber frame with brick infill, painted brick refacing, and additions. It has a plain tiled hipped roof and a large brick external chimney on the left side.
The structure consists of three framed bays and a through-passage, with two storeys, an attic that includes dormers, and a cellar. There is a three-course band between the main storeys. The front elevation has a regular arrangement, with all windows and doors dating from the mid-20th century. It includes three ground floor 2-light casements with cambered heads, three first floor 2-light casements, and three gabled dormers with 2-light casements. The doorway, located to the right of centre, features a ledged and battened door with a cambered head.
On the left side, there is a mid-19th century single storey wing that projects outwards, which includes a canted bay window with a central 4-pane sash and side sash windows that have moulded architraves. The interior has been significantly altered, but it retains a 17th century dog-leg staircase in the central bay, which has part of the original moulded handrail and turned balusters still intact. There are also 19th and 20th century additions at the rear.
