Description
HANBURY CP SCHOOL ROAD (north side) SO 96 SW Walled garden and adjoining 3/131 wall to north-east about 200 yards west of Hanbury Hall GV II
Walled garden and adjoining wall. Late C18. Brick in English garden wall bond with sandstone ashlar dressings and copings. Wall about 10 feet high encloses a space of approximately 7,200 square yards. Entrance at centre of west side has a semi-circular headed archway, flanking pilasters and raised pediment. Opposing smaller entrance in east wall has brick piers with small ball finials. The wall adjoining to the north-east varies between about 4 feet and 10 feet high and runs north-west for a distance of about 30 yards and returns to the south-east for about 2 yards. The first 20 yards of its length are of lower height and flanked by square piers with pyramidal capping; at the centre of this section is a small gateway also flanked by square piers. The wall formed part of an additional walled garden of which only one other section of walling survives (qv). Both gardens retain their orcharding. Included as part of the garden layout of Hanbury Hall (qv).
