Description
Russell House is a house believed to have been built in 1791, with early 19th century additions and late 19th century alterations. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof. The house has two storeys with an attic and consists of three bays, with a storey band. The ground floor showcases bowed sash windows of early 19th century design, complete with glazing bars, fluted pilasters, and cornices. The first floor has boxed sashes with glazing bars, while the attic dormers are fitted with segmental heads and sashes that also have glazing bars.
To the right of the main structure is an added bay, which includes a blocked keyed elliptical archway on the ground floor and a sash window with glazing bars above it. Inside the blocked archway is a door that is sheltered by an iron openwork porch with a leaded canopy. The house features copings and chimneys on the gables and between the main house and the added bay. Adjacent to the right is a former barn that was converted into a drawing room and studio in the late 19th century. Within the blocked elliptical archway, there is a timber bay window with curved sides, flanked by four pairs of ventilation slits, each topped with an oval opening. A photograph from the late 1870s shows the front door located in the middle bay of the main part of the house, along with the barn prior to its conversion. In 1885, the house was purchased by Frank Millet, an American artist who tragically died when the Titanic sank in 1912.
