Description
House. Dating back to the 15th century, Hollies Cottage has been altered and extended in the mid-20th century. It is built with timber framing, painted brick and rendered infill, brick replacement walling, and a sandstone rubble plinth. It has a half-hipped roof returning to the sides, covered with plain tiles, with a rebuilt brick stack on the ridge. Originally a cruck hall house, likely three framed bays remain, with an inserted chimney in the through-passageway. The house is single-storey with an attic containing dormers and also has a cellar. A full cruck truss survives in the right gable end, with mainly two irregularly sized panels from sill to wall-plate. On the front elevation are three square casements and a large casement with multiple panes, along with two gabled dormers featuring 2-light casements. A shaped doorhead indicates a former door on the right side of the front elevation. At the rear left are a pair of blocked, narrow rectangular openings with semi-circular arched heads. A single-storey, hipped roof extension was added in the 20th century to the right gable end, and a large two-storey addition was built in the 20th century to the left gable end, forming an L-plan and incorporating the present main entrance. The interior was not inspected.
