Description
Barnum Meadow is a barn and attached cart shed, originally built in the mid-18th century with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century. The structure is constructed of brick, featuring a dentilled eaves course and courses of alternate header ventilation patterns, partly set on a coursed dressed sandstone base, and has a plain tiled roof. The barn consists of four bays, with the three-bay section having a central wagon bay that includes opposed cart entries with cambered heads; the double doors on the west side are now blocked. There is an additional bay, likely from the 19th century, which is two storeys high and originally had two archways at the north gable end, with a central brick pier leading into a former cart store or shelter. The east elevation features sandstone and brick steps leading to a loft door.
Inside, the barn roof is supported by a double row of trenched purlins and two intermediate collar- and tie-beam trusses with raking struts. The cart shed, which adjoins the west side of the barn, has three bays supported by brick piers and is topped with a lean-to corrugated iron roof.
