Description
This is a small country house, now a golf club house, dating from approximately 1814, with later alterations and restorations carried out around 1948 following a fire. It was originally built for Elias Isaac. The exterior is largely rendered with a cement face over ashlar, although some original ashlar details remain, including the porch, entablature and rear loggia. A brick range extends to the rear of the building; the roof is concealed, and stacks have been removed. A reddish-pink brick wall is also present.
The main range is two storeys high with seven first-floor windows arranged in a 2:3:2 pattern, supplemented by a single-storey range to the left that rises to two storeys on the garden side. The main range features a central break forward with a detached pediment containing a clock, topped by an entablature and a low, coped parapet. Throughout the building, there are 6/6 sash windows with sills. The central entrance is accessed via a distyle Roman Doric porch, which contains a renewed part-glazed door and overlight with glazing bars. To the left of the entrance is a further section featuring three 6/6 sashes and a renewed part-glazed door with a fanlight set within a timber doorcase, a cornice, and a low, coped parapet.
The garden (south) facade comprises a two-storey main range of three bays and a two-storey range to the east, also of three bays. The main range has a central, shallow break forward. A continuous, seven-column Doric loggia extends across the ground floor, complete with an entablature and balustrade; Doric responds are also present. The first floor windows are tall 1/1 horned sashes in cambered, tooled architraves with keystones. A central, wide, tall tripartite window with French windows sits between the 1/1 sashes, similarly framed with a tooled architrave. The ground floor features French windows, with a wider central window, and outer windows with segmental-headed overlights in tooled surrounds and keystones. The range to the east has a central, full-height, solid rectangular bay, with 2/2 sashes. Further 1/1 segment-headed sashes flank the bay, all enclosed within tooled surrounds and keystones. The right return side showcases five first-floor windows with thin Doric pilaster strips between them, again primarily featuring 1/1 horned sashes.
The interior retains original features, including a restored open well staircase featuring ornate cast-iron balusters and a wreathed handrail. A colonnade to the hall incorporates two Roman Doric columns. Six-raised-and-fielded-panel doors and panelled shutters are also present. The dining room at the rear has two four-panel doors curved on plan to create an apse shape.
Attached to the building is a wall that slopes down and includes pedestrian access, running alongside the wall of the former walled garden (now a tennis court). The wall is approximately 4 metres high and features a coped top. The Isaacs family were Worcestershire bankers and owners of Berwick and Company Bank. Before the fire, the house consisted of three storeys, a mansard roof and a bell tower. Boughton Park has operated as a golf club since 1928.
