Description

The Red Lion Inn is a house that has been converted into an inn, likely dating from the 17th century, with later additions and alterations, including an 18th-century range at the rear. The building is constructed of brick in Flemish bond and is colourwashed, featuring a renewed plain tile roof. There are five brick stacks, which are pinkish-red at the left end and right rear, some with oversailing courses and pots.

The exterior consists of two storeys with four first-floor windows. On the first floor, there are three 8/8 sash windows in near-flush frames, while the second opening is blind. The ground floor features 1/1 horned sash windows with flat arches made of gauged brick. The entrance, located off-centre to the left, has a six-panel door set within a fluted doorcase, topped by a blind panel and a hood. There is a modillion eaves band.

On the right side of the building, both the ground and first floors have 8/8 sash windows set in plain reveals with sills and cambered arches. At the rear, there are outshuts; the one on the right (east) has a catslide roof and a four-flush-panel door with a cambered arch in the return, while the one on the left (west) has a hipped roof and three first-floor 8/8 sash windows.

Inside, the ground floor has been remodelled, while the first floor features a timber-framed partition wall with wattle and daub square infill panels, along with further evidence of framing in the left end wall. There is also raised and fielded panelling in the rear bedroom, which has been reused.

The Red Lion Inn is part of a good group of buildings that includes Nos 79 and 79A, 81, The Commandery, No.1 The Commandery Drive, and Nos 87-111 (odd) Sidbury.
