Description
The Headless Cross War Memorial is a 6-meter tall monument made of Portland stone, located to the south of St Luke’s Church, which is also listed as Grade II. The monument features a cross that rises from a tapered shaft. The cross has a small shield with the inscription "HIS" carved on it. The shaft includes a moulded base and capital, and it is set on an octagonal pedestal that is elevated by a three-stepped concrete base.
On the front face of the pedestal, there is an inscription that reads:
TO THE/ GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN/ GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THE/ MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918/ LIVE THOU FOR ENGLAND/ WE FOR ENGLAND DIED
The names of 99 individuals who are commemorated by the memorial are carved on the other seven sides of the pedestal. Additionally, the front face of the top step includes the inscription "ALSO IN WORLD WAR II 1939-1945."
