Description
The boundary marker, dated 1865, is a cast iron post with a rounded top. It features relief lettering that reads "CLERKENWELL 1865 E.J. THOMPSON W. GILLINGWATER CHURCH WARDENS." This marker is part of a group of boundary posts that were erected to define the boundary of the Clerkenwell estate, which was given as a gift by Sir George Strode to the poor of the parish of Clerkenwell in London in the mid 17th century. Originally, there were twenty-five such markers, as shown on early Ordnance Survey maps, but the estate was gradually sold off during the 20th century. The marker has recently been re-erected in its original position as indicated on the third edition Ordnance Survey map after being found in a nearby culvert. It holds group value with the other boundary markers in Malvern.
