Description
The boundary marker located in the kitchen garden of Davenham House was erected in 1909. It is made of cast iron and features a rounded top. The post has relief lettering that reads "CLERKENWELL/ CHARITY/ TRUSTEES./ 1909./ ALDERMAN/ E.J. PERRY,/ CHAIRMAN./ THOS.W.WOOD./ RECTOR." The lower part of the post is currently hidden by undergrowth.
This marker is part of a group of boundary posts that were established to mark the boundaries of the Clerkenwell estate, which was given in the mid-17th century by Sir George Strode to benefit the poor of the parish of Clerkenwell in London. Originally, there were twenty-five such markers, as shown on early Ordnance Survey maps. The estate was gradually sold off during the 20th century.
This boundary post is significant as one of the cast iron markers from the 19th and early 20th centuries that delineate the Clerkenwell Estate. It remains intact and in its original position, contributing to the group value of the other markers.
