Description
The cider mill and hop kiln at Monks Orchard is a late 18th century structure with a late 19th century hop kiln added to its west side. The cider mill is built of brick with a sandstone rubble cellar and features a tiled roof. It consists of four bays and is two storeys high with a cellar, showcasing a dentilled eaves cornice. The main elevation includes a 20th century ground floor casement window with a cambered head, two 20th century first floor casements, and two planked doors, also with cambered heads. There is a planked door to the cellar located in the north gable end. Inside, the mill has two interrupted tie-beam trusses and a central brick partition, while the cellar features a brick tunnel vault. The interior retains a complete stone cider mill and mill wheel, as well as a stone cider press and trough. The hop kiln is constructed of brick in Flemish bond with a slate roof and has a square base. A connecting passageway, which is slate-hung and tiled, links the first floor of the mill to the hop kiln and includes two casements in the west elevation.
