Description

Gaines is an 18th-century red brick house of an irregular plan, constructed in several phases. The main block dates primarily from the mid-18th century and has three storeys and ten windows, featuring sash windows. A slight projection of three bays lacks a pediment. A large bow front extends from the north-east end, and a brick-faced timber-frame wing, originating on the south-west, is also present. Later additions have been made. The interior features a fine room in an early Gothic Revival style, along with good Adam-style stucco decoration. A small staircase is located beneath an oval glazed dome.
