Description

A farmhouse dating from circa 1600, with alterations in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. The house is timber-framed, built on a base of sandstone rubble and brick, with roughcast infill and brick replacement walling. It has plain tiled roofs. The design incorporates a hall and a cross-wing; the hall part is composed of two framed bays aligned east to west. A large external rubble chimney with offsets and a brick stack is at the east gable end, with the base of the chimney encased by two partly timber-framed outshuts. The cross-wing is at the west gable end and features an external chimney to the west side elevation with three brick stacks, enriched with angular projections and a joint cap. The house is two storeys high with a cellar; the cross-wing has moulded bargeboards. The hall has four rows of panels from sill to wall-plate, long straight braces across some first floor lower corners. It includes a collar and tie-beam truss at the east gable end with visible struts and a V-strut in the apex. The cross-wing has six rows of small square panels, long straight braces across some lower corners on both floors, and a collar and tie-beam truss with five struts to the lower collar, two to the upper collar and a single strut to the apex. The two central panels beneath the lower collar are decorated with concave lozenges. The north front elevation of the hall part has a ground floor three-light and two-light casement, two first floor two-light casements, and a 20th-century door at the main entrance. The outshut has a three-light casement and a 19th-century door. The cross-wing gable end has a square light on the ground floor, a first floor three-light casement and a central 20th-century door. The interior was not inspected. The property holds group value.
