Description

Cherry Tree Cottage is a cottage dating from the 17th and 19th centuries. It features a timber frame with rendered brick infill, while the 19th-century part is constructed of brick and topped with a thatched roof. The building is one and a half storeys high and consists of a three-cell single-depth range, which may have originally included a through passage but has undergone significant alterations. The box frame construction has square panels measuring 3 by 8, indicating it may have been built in two phases, as evidenced by the paired posts and a down brace in the center of the north side.

The east gable wall has had its timber framing removed from the ground floor. The east extension and the north kitchen outshut are from the 19th century, along with a small 20th-century outshut adjacent to these. The windows are modern hardwood casements, mostly fitted into the original openings. A thatched porch is located on the south side, and there is a rebuilt brick stack with a gable stack at the east end.

Inside, much of the framing is revealed, and there are various alterations. The south lateral stack, which once heated the west room, is now divided. The east room has been opened up into the 19th-century extension. A modern staircase has been added, and the roof features closed collar trusses with clasped purlins.
