Description
Firs Farmhouse is a farmhouse and former stables that have been incorporated into the house. It dates from the 17th century, with early 19th century and 20th century alterations. The building features a timber frame with a rendered brick front and a roof made of ashlar, slate, and plain tiles, along with brick end stacks. The layout is roughly L-shaped, with the house occupying one limb and the former stables in the other, connected by a brick link at the corner.
The farmhouse is two storeys high and has three windows, featuring a combination of three, two, and three light 20th century metal casements. The central entrance has a pedimented doorcase supported by Doric pilasters, and a semi-circular fanlight with radial glazing above a door made of six raised and fielded panels. The rear wall reveals visible framing, with square framing and various gables.
Inside, the roof structure shows the development of the building, which has a square plan with gables on all four sides. A wing has been added to the left, also gabled on all three elevations, and the rear facade was remodelled in the early 19th century. The stables, now converted into domestic accommodation, originally featured segmental headed openings dressed in brick and were linked to the house by a single-storey brick outhouse from the 18th century.
