Description
Temeside House is a building originally constructed as a union workhouse in 1837, later serving as the offices for the Tenbury Rural District Council, and now functioning as a police and fire station as well as local authority offices. The building was altered in 1937 and is made of brick with ashlar dressings, topped with a slate roof. It features gable-end parapets with kneelers and shaped finials at the front, along with brick ridge stacks and two diagonally set brick stacks at the rear. The structure is part two storeys, part single storey, and includes an attic with dormers.
The main west elevation is arranged in a pattern of a:b:c:b:a. The outer bays contain two ground floor two-light casements and two gabled dormers, each with two-light casements. The left end dormers are adorned with scalloped bargeboards. The two right end bays have had their ground floor windows replaced by a large 20th-century doorway for fire engine access, along with a small single storey wing added. The adjacent inner bays feature full-height projecting gabled wings with three-light first floor casements, blind loopholes in the apex of each gable, and doorways with Tudor-arched heads and studded 20th-century doors. Two-light ground floor windows are located in the angles. The central bay is also gabled and has a three-light casement on both main floors, with the first floor window flanked by single-light casements.
Above the ground floor window, there is a plaque that reads "TENBURY RURAL/ DISTRICT COUNCIL/ REMODELLED 1937." The gable above features a datestone set within a square ashlar border, inscribed "UNION/ WORKHOUSE/ ERECTED/ 1837." The rear elevation appears to be largely unaltered.
