Description
Nos 51 and 53 on Teme Street are a row of houses and shops built in the early to mid-18th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century. The buildings are constructed from handmade brick, which is partly painted, and feature a slate roof with a ridge stack at the south end and a large square stack at the rear. They are two storeys tall with an attic and consist of two plus three bays, with the two-bay section flanked by brick pilasters at the first floor level.
On the ground floor, there are three canted bay windows, each with a central 12-pane sash and 8-pane side sashes, although the lower sashes of the right bay window have been replaced with plate glass. The first floor features two large 12-pane sashes (one of which is partly altered), two smaller 12-pane sashes, and a 4-pane sash, all with cambered heads. The roof includes three skylights.
A continuous flat-roofed canopy extends across the full width of the building above the bay windows, supported by shaped brackets at each end and on either side of the two doorways flanking the central bay window. The entrances include a six-panelled door (with two glazed panels), a set of double doors, and a large ledged and battened door at the right end. The canopy also supports a wrought iron balcony on the first floor of the two-bay section. At the rear, there are two large wings, and the gable end of the wing for No 51 features tiers of pigeon holes.
