Description
The former Swan Hotel, now divided into four houses, dates largely to the 18th century with substantial later additions and alterations. It is constructed of painted render and painted brick with red brick additions, and has plain-tile and slate gabled and hipped roofs with parapets. Numerous brick stacks are present, including a projecting gable-end stack and several on later wings. The building follows an L-shaped plan with additions to the rear and side.
The south front features a large, projecting two-story rendered bow to the left, with five-light wood mullioned windows beneath a conical slate roof with a modillioned curved cornice. To the right of the bow is a wing with three 6/6 sash windows with cambered lintels at the first floor, and two ground floor Venetian sash windows (without glazing bars), capped by a parapet. The rear of this wing incorporates a twin-gabled range, the right-hand gable featuring painted timber framing with lapped raking struts forming a diagonal pattern. Further extensions to the right feature three 8/8 sash windows with cambered heads and a dentil course at the eaves. Ground floor areas are covered by 20th-century flat-roofed extensions. An additional brick wing to the left includes a projecting two-story brick bow window with three curved 8/1 sashes on each floor, alongside a recessed doorway with an above-door sash window. The left return side of the brick wing displays a two-window range of 8/8 sashes, with a 2/2 sash on the left side of the first floor, and a projecting brick chimney to the right. A large late 19th-century wing with attic space is set back to the left, topped with a slate roof. A 19th-century service wing and 20th-century additions are present to the rear.
The interior has been stripped of original features and is now lined with 20th-century finishes.
