Description
This building is a barn and stables located about 30 yards east of Bungay Lake Farmhouse. It dates from the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-18th century and mid-19th century. The structure is partly timber-framed with some brick infill, partly weatherboarded on a sandstone and brick base, and partly brick, topped with a corrugated asbestos roof.
Originally, the barn had three framed bays aligned north to south, featuring a central wagon bay. In the 18th century, two additional bays were added at the north end, with the bay closest to the original section also serving as a wagon bay. Both wagon bays have opposed cart entries. The framing consists of partly three rows of panels and partly long rectangular panels extending from the sill to the wall-plate, with a collar and tie-beam truss supported by four struts at the south end. The northern brick section includes header ventilation courses and a loft door with a cambered head in the gable end.
Inside, the roof features intermediate collar and tie-beam trusses with struts and two tiers of trenched purlins. An adjoining stable to the northeast, built in the 19th century, is constructed of brick with a plain tiled roof and has two levels. It has a dentilled eaves cornice and roughly three bays, with the south elevation featuring two doors and a window, both with cambered heads, as well as a loft opening. There is a blocked through-archway at the east end, with timber lintels to the north and south. External sandstone and brick steps at the east end lead up to the loft door, which also has a cambered head.
