Description

Woodcote Farmhouse, divided into two dwellings, dates to the late 18th century with alterations in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of brick with a two-span plain tiled roof, banded with red and blue tiles. The roof has gable-end parapets with ashlar coping, kneelers and ball finials, a large ridge stack at the right end, and rear stacks with blue brick capping. The building is two storeys with an attic and cellar, and features a dentilled eaves cornice and four bays. Windows have gauged flat heads and are mid-19th century mullion and transom casements, comprising two 3-light and one 2-light windows on the ground floor, and two 3-light and two 2-light windows on the first floor. The main entrance, in the third bay, is sheltered by a mid-19th century gabled canopy with pierced scalloped bargeboards and a moulded finial on shaped brackets. The doorcase has original reeded pilasters, raised and fielded panelled reveals, a soffit, a 6-panelled door (with glazed upper panels, raised and fielded middle panels), and a barred segmental fanlight. A rectangular window with stained glass is located to the left of the door. The left side elevation features casements with cambered heads, a doorcase with pilasters, a 6-panelled door, and a traceried fanlight; a central valley gutter leads to a stone gargoyle and fountain head below. Attic lights are incorporated into the left gable end. Inside, the building retains its dog-leg staircase with a wreathed handrail and turned newels. Later additions have been made to the rear.

The garden walls, to the west and north, are constructed of brick with sandstone coping, varying in height from three to five feet. The west wall adjoins the farmhouse and extends west for eight yards before returning south for approximately 40 yards. It is interrupted by a simple gateway, north of which is a mounting block with five sandstone steps and a dog kennel in its base. This section of wall divides the garden from the farmyard. The wall returns east for approximately 50 yards alongside the main road, and is interrupted by two square rusticated sandstone gate piers with pyramidal capping and ball finials, supporting a single ornate cast iron gate. Beyond the gate piers is a moat bridge with an elliptical archway, approximately five feet wide and five yards long. It is bordered by tall decorative cast iron railings with standards topped with urn finials. The moat survives to the south and east of the farmhouse.
