Description

House, dating from around 1848 with alterations made in the mid to late 19th century. The building is constructed in brick with a slate roof and ridge end stacks topped with blue brick caps. It rises two storeys above a cellar, with pierced scalloped ironwork to the eaves and a central gable at the front.

The front elevation is arranged in three bays. The central bay breaks forward slightly and is gabled. The outer bays are fitted with canted bay window additions at ground floor level, each with a moulded cornice. The first floor windows are 3-light with shallow pointed-arched lights and dripmoulds supported on corbels. The central bay features a first floor oriel window, also with shallow pointed-arched lights and a fishscale-tiled roof. The central entrance is sheltered by a gabled porch with fishscale tile banding. The porch features moulded pierced bargeboards forming a cusped pointed archway, and is supported on large shaped brackets carved with foliated decoration. The 19th century door has round-headed panels and a plain transom light. A trefoil opening is set within a stone triangle in the gable apex.

Internally, the house contains a central dog-leg staircase with a moulded wreathed handrail. The base of the wall at the south-west end is constructed of coursed sandstone blocks, possibly from an earlier building on the site.

Although considerably larger than the other houses on the Dodford Chartist estate, the basic plan, proportions, materials, and trefoil gable detail suggest this house was also built by the Chartist Land Company and is marked on a layout of the estate. The houses each came with a small-holding, mainly of four acres, intended to provide occupants with an independent livelihood and the opportunity to qualify for a county vote.
