Description

Great Meadow is a house built around 1830 to 1840, with later extensions in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of Flemish bond red brick, with English garden wall bond on the sides, and features a Welsh slate roof with gabled ends. The building has brick gable end stacks topped with square yellow clay pots.

The layout includes two main front rooms with an entrance and stair hall between them, and a service room in an integral two-storey outshut behind the left-hand room, along with an outbuilding behind the outshut. In the late 19th century, the original outshut was extended to the rear of the right-hand room, and another outshut was added to the left side of the outbuilding wing. In the 20th century, the outbuilding was converted into living accommodation, and a small conservatory was built in the angle.

The exterior is two storeys high and features a symmetrical three-bay northwest front. The windows are 12-pane sashes from the 19th century, with flat rusticated painted stone arches and cills. The central doorway also has a similar arch and features a flush panel and glazed door, along with a later 19th-century ornamental wooden porch that has a tented roof and is now glazed. The rear includes two-storey outshuts, a lower former outbuilding wing with an outshut on the outer side, and the small 20th-century conservatory.

Inside, much of the original joinery remains, including four-panel doors, a dog-leg staircase with stick balusters, moulded newels, and a mahogany handrail. The chambers have simple chimneypieces and grates, although the ground floor chimneypieces have been removed. The right-hand room features flanking cupboards.

Historically, Great Meadow was owned by Feargus O'Connor, the founder of the Chartist Land Company, which was established in 1846. It is located on a four-acre plot, similar to the 40 other Chartist houses in Dodford, and was likely part of the Chartist estate designed to provide tenants with independence and the right to vote.
