Description
Brae Side is a house built around 1848, with some alterations and additions made in the late 20th century. It is constructed of brick on a sandstone base and features a slate roof with ridge end and rear stacks. The building has a rectangular three-bay plan and is a single storey. The main north front is divided into three bays, with the central part slightly projecting forward and topped with a gable that has moulded bargeboards supported by shaped brackets. The outer bays contain 2-light casements in their original openings, while the central section has a large late 20th-century multi-paned bay window that replaced the original front entrance door and flanking windows. There is a trefoil opening in a stone triangle at the apex of the gable. The main entrance is now located on the left side of the house. There are also late 20th-century additions at the rear. Brae Side is one of 40 similar Chartist houses in Dodford, which were primarily built on four-acre plots by the Chartist Land Company. Each smallholding was designed to provide its occupant with an independent livelihood and the chance to qualify for a county vote. The house is situated in a row with Laburnum Cottage and Malvern View, and it is included for its group value.
