Description
Edith Cottage is a house built around 1848, with some alterations and additions made in the late 20th century. The structure is made of brick sitting on a sandstone base, topped with a slate roof that features ridge end and rear stacks. It has a rectangular three-bay plan and is a single storey high. The main east front is divided into five sections, with the central part slightly projecting and gabled, showcasing moulded bargeboards on shaped brackets. The outer bays contain 2-light late 20th-century casements in their original openings, while the central section has a half-glazed door flanked by single-light casements, also from the late 20th century, in their original openings. At the apex of the gable, there is a trefoil opening within a stone triangle. The rear of the cottage has undergone late 20th-century alterations and additions. Edith Cottage is one of 40 similar Chartist houses in Dodford, which were built mainly on four-acre plots by the Chartist Land Company. These small-holdings were designed to provide their occupants with an independent livelihood and the chance to qualify for a county vote.
