Description
This house, located at 1 Priory Road, was built around 1848 and has undergone some alterations in the late 20th century. It is constructed of brick on a sandstone base and features a slate roof with ridge end stacks. The building has a rectangular three-bay plan and is a single storey.
The main west front is designed with a 1:3:1 bay arrangement, where the central section slightly projects forward and is topped with a gable that has moulded bargeboards supported by shaped brackets. The outer bays contain original 2-light casements, while the central section features the main entrance, which is sheltered by a gabled canopy with a ball finial above a half-glazed door, flanked by single-light casements. There is a trefoil opening within a stone triangle at the apex of the gable. Additionally, there is a large external chimney with blue brick offsets located at the rear right side of the house.
At the rear, there have been 20th-century alterations. This house is one of 40 similar Chartist houses in Dodford, which were primarily built on four-acre plots by the Chartist Land Company. Each smallholding was intended to provide its occupant with an independent livelihood and the chance to qualify for a county vote, as noted by W. Bond in "From Hamlet to Parish" published in 1982.
