Description
This building is a barn and stables located about 10 yards south-east of the Bell Inn. It dates from the 18th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. The structure is built of brick and features machine-tiled roofs. It consists of five bays arranged in a north/south direction, with a central wagon bay that has opposed cart entries, although the entry to the west is now blocked. The gable ends display header ventilation courses and diaper ventilation patterns.
Inside, there are intermediate tie-beam trusses with raking struts and two tiers of trenched purlins. At the north end, there are small two-level wings; the northern wing includes a two-light window and a loft opening at its gable end, as well as a door on the west side, all featuring cambered heads. The north-west wing has a door with a transom light and a cambered head, along with a loft door in its gable end. Adjacent to this wing is a 19th-century lean-to stable addition that has two three-light windows from the 19th century, two three-light windows from the 20th century, a door, and a stable door on its west elevation, with all openings also having cambered heads. This large barn is prominently located near the Bell Inn and is included for its group value.
