Description
The orangery, now a house, and the adjoining garden walls are located about 200 yards north of Hagley Hall. They date from the mid-18th century and have undergone mid-20th century alterations. The structure is built of brick with sandstone ashlar dressings and features a slate roof with pedimented gable ends and a brick ridge stack. It has two storeys, an attic, and a basement. The main facade has three bays, articulated by a three-bay round-headed arcade with stone keyblocks and an impost band. Each opening on the ground floor contains a pair of multi-paned double doors, with a multi-paned window and a barred segmental fanlight above. The attic features a 4-pane round-headed window with a stone architrave set within a pedimented gable.
Flanking the main structure are single-storey, single-bay wings with parapets on the south front elevation and lean-to roofs at the rear. Each wing has a 24-pane sash window with a gauged flat head and stone keyblock. Access to the basement is available at the rear. The orangery is situated at the center of the north side of a walled garden, which has brick walls with sandstone copings, standing about 10 feet high and measuring approximately 100 yards long by 70 yards wide. There is an original doorway with a cambered head to the southeast, and at the center of the south wall, there is a 20th-century replacement gateway featuring square piers, ball finials, and wrought iron gates.
