Description
This building is a barn and stables located about 25 yards south-east of Moor Hall. It dates from around 1700, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. The structure is made of brick and features plain tiled roofs. The main range consists of eight bays that are aligned north-east to south-west, with wagon bays located in the third and sixth bays from the south-west end. There is a five-bay return at both the north-west and north-east ends. The main range includes header ventilation courses and has two inserted 20th-century double doors on the main south-west elevation, along with a loft opening in the south-east gable end.
Inside, the building has intermediate collar and tie-beam trusses with two struts and a V-strut in the apex, as well as a single tier of trenched purlins. A brick wall with a large round-headed archway divides the fifth and sixth bays, which was likely the former end wall. The bays to the north-east of this wall are later additions and feature 20th-century metal roof trusses. The five-bay return is partly two levels and includes two ground floor openings, a stable door, a loft door, and a large cart opening in its north-east elevation. There are also two windows and a loft door in its north-west gable end, with all openings having cambered heads. The interior of the return has tie-beam trusses with raking struts and two tiers of trenched purlins.
The single-storey wing from the 19th century that adjoins the main range to the north-west, as well as the 20th-century additions to both ranges, are not of special architectural interest. This large building encloses the farmyard to the north and west and is a prominent feature of the farmstead, especially when approaching Moor Hall from the south. It is included for its group value.
