Description

61 and 62 Dudley Street are two shops built around 1860, designed in the Italianate style. The building features stucco and painted brick with ashlar dressings and has a parapeted roof with brick stacks. It stands four storeys tall and has a six-window range.

The first floor showcases 20th-century shop fronts and includes a Greek key frieze and cornice above it. There is a sill course on the second floor, topped by a guilloche frieze and a modillioned cornice, with quoins at the corners. The first-floor windows have architraves, friezes, and consoled cornices, with scrolled cresting above six-pane sashes; the lower sashes of the first three bays on the left have had their glazing bars removed. The second-floor windows feature eared architraves, friezes, and cornices above twelve-pane sashes, while the third floor has windows with eared architraves and six-pane sashes.

The corner range has a two-window return and a three-window range facing Queen Square. This corner section includes an apron frieze and a sill course on the second floor, with altered parapets. The first floor has round-headed windows with spandrels, friezes, and cornices, while the second floor features architraved windows with panelled aprons, friezes, and consoled pediments above four-pane sashes. The third floor has windows with eared and shouldered architraves and keystones, also with four-pane sashes. The three-window range has sill bands and faceted quoins on the second and third floors, with altered parapets. The first floor has altered windows with 20th-century casements, and the second floor has windows with eared architraves and strap work cresting over horned sashes, along with similar windows featuring scrolled cresting.

The interior has not been inspected. This building is included for its group value.
