Description

Lloyds Bank, located in Queen Square, Wolverhampton, is a bank building constructed in 1878, with an additional top storey added in the late 19th century. Designed by J.A. Chatwin, it showcases an Italianate architectural style and is built from ashlar stone. The building stands four storeys tall and features a four-bay range.

The exterior includes a moulded plinth, rusticated pilasters, an entablature at the ground floor, and a cornice at the top. The tall ground floor has etched plate glass windows framed with architraves and fielded apron panels, with one window removed for a cashcard machine. The entablature is adorned with relief panels depicting coal mining, agriculture, and engineering, topped by a Greek key cornice.

Giant pilasters rise to the first and second floors, where the first-floor windows are framed with eared architraves, embellished friezes, and segmental pediments. The second floor features round-headed windows with console keystones and enriched spandrels, along with a rusticated band above. The third floor has segmental-headed windows with flanking guilloche strips and some foliage decoration on the cornice, which has scrolled end terminals.

The round-headed entrance in the first bay is framed with an architrave and keystone, leading to a Doric porch supported by columns on plinths, with paterae on the capitals and an Ionic entablature. Inside, the interior features Ionic pilasters and cornices that extend around the beams.
