Description
The terrace walls and steps of St Peter's Church, located on Lich Gates, were built between 1905 and 1907. They extend approximately 79 meters, with a 38-meter return to the north and a 35-meter return to the south, and include a war memorial. The walls are constructed from sandstone ashlar, featuring rock-faced revetting and a lower terrace wall to the south. Wrought-iron gates are present, and the walls have roll-moulded coping and battered piers topped with ball finials.
The steps consist of two flights with an oval area in between. A statue of Lady Wulfruna, dated 1974, is located nearby, along with gates to the south that lead down the steps (the gates to the north have been removed). The gates are paired and enriched with cartouches, and there are lamp standards at both the top and bottom of the steps. Two alcoves for seating in the revetting have segmental arches that die into the jambs. There is also a gate at the south-west angle and a lamp standard at the north-east angle. This structure serves as an important landscape feature between the church and the square in front of the Civic Offices.
